My name is Amelia Southern,  I love photography and I am very passionate about music and making an impact on my society in any way I can. I know more bands than people at this school. I also enjoy running, food, exploring, history, traveling, and making an impact on my society. Being a part of my cross country team and the newspaper staff makes me feel like I can belong to something special in not only Fayetteville but in our society, hopefully, to make a change and leave an impact on others.

Longing: I found myself in the midst of isolation, longing for a sense of normalcy. Even the slightest bit of sunlight would change my mood, I became desperate for the reminders of normal.

Isolation and Mental Health

Life can be repetitive under the environment we are constrained to. Using timed exposure, I wanted to capsulate this feeling by demonstrating my limited movement throughout the days.

Isolation can look like drowning in darkness and longing for companionship.

Contained: Since March 15th, 2020, Fayetteville Public Schools have been closed. It wasnt until August 24th, 2020, students were allowed to set foot on campus. Since March 15th, Arkansas citizens have juggled with the new normal of COVID-19. Most people restored to strict social distancing guidelines and were restricted to the empty corners and living rooms of their homes. The shadow of who, we collectively once were lurked as we adapted to the constraints of our own home.

Connection: Through quarantine, there was limited to none in-person communication. Connection and companionship are extremely important to humans and when crisis arises we still find ways to meet our biological needs- face time. In the age of technology, we away to socially distance but never stay apart.

Self- Reflection: With the infinite amount of time I was promised with the isolation I spent my time analyzing my physical and mental flaws to the point of no recognition.

No such thing as normalcy: Ever since I was little, I loved dressing up to remind myself of the importance of self-love. With no place to go, I dressed up every day of isolation to find normal. A simple task as putting on makeup, fancy clothes, heels or even just doing your hair can be extra hard when you are struggling with mental illness but it is important to find time to take care of yourself.

A new normal: As news of the spread of COVID-19 became more prevalent, citizens began practicing social distancing and other safety precautions, an example of these precautions: masks. Masks can seem smothering just like a mental illness but in our new reality, masks save us.

Suffocating: I was juggling virtual school, a new relationship, protective parents, being the founder of a non-profit all during the time of COVID-19. I found myself suffocating and reaching for some breath of air. But to my surprise, it seemed all along that the hands of my suffocation were my own.
